I attended a Genealogy workshop today (April 28) at the Colchester Historical Museum with guest author, radio personality (CBC-on Fridays), Dr.Terry Punch. He is the most interesting presenter and a great story teller.The cost was $25.00 which included Lunch & break.
The morning presentation was on Genealogical Research....
a. Pre-Repository Steps-(Rack your memory, Speak to Relatives,Search Family Documents, Make record of findings, List specifics you need to find and Read lots of background info.
b. Repositories- Public Library,Provincial Archives,National Archives, Historical Societies,Cemeteries, Court House Records, Churches.
c. Researching- Look at published material, Use indexes and catalogs, Keep a log of sources, Always identify sources and keep a journal or log, investigate Census returns, Probate documentation, Land Grants, Vital Records, Church Registers, Newspapers.
The afternoon session was specific to Historic Links between New England & Nova Scotia.
He left lots of time for Questions. There were about 50 people in attendance.

Who Am I?

I started out calmly, tracking my tree
To see if I could find the makings of me
And all that I had was Great Grandfather's name
Not knowing his wife or from whence he came.
I chased him across a long line of states
And came up with pages and pages of dates.
When all put together, it made me forlorn
As poor old Great Grandpa had never been born.
I looked up the record of one Uncle John
Then found the old man to be younger than his son.
The facts I collected made me quite sad
As dear old Great Grandfather was never a dad.
It seems that someone was pulling my leg
I'm not at all sure I wasn't hatched from an egg.
After hundreds of dollars I've spent on my tree
I can't help but wonder if I'm really me.
